The New Orleans Business Alliance has found a team to conduct a three-month study of the opportunities available for small businesses in the city’s health care sector.
Democracy Collaborative of Washington, D.C., and DMM & Associates in New Orleans will conduct the study that will evaluate what hospital needs local small businesses could fulfill. Possibilities include transportation, commercial laundry, facility upgrades, food service, inventory management and medical kit assembly.
The study will also look at the information technology infrastructure in the city and determine whether there is enough support to help small businesses build their capacity to secure contracts from the University Medical Center, Veterans Affairs Medical Center and New Orleans East Hospital.
The 90-day project will review hospital procurement practices, including interviews with hospital administrators regarding their needs and discussions with small business to determine the technical assistance they will require.
At the completion of the study, the Democracy Collaborative and DMM & Associates will be in charge of developing tactics to connect job seekers and small business owners with anchor institutions in the health care sector.
Earlier this week, the New Orleans Business Alliance announced it had received $100,000 from LCMC Health, the nonprofit that will manage the University Medical Center. It is intended to aid economic development the biomedical corridor. NOLABA CEO Melissa Ehlinger said the money has not been earmarked for a specific use.
