Healthcare Engagement Internship
The Democracy Collaborative (TDC) is hiring for a DC-based, part-time (up to 20 hours per week), paid intern position to support the work of the Healthcare Anchor Network (HAN). The internship will focus on maintaining and analyzing a database related to tracking the impact healthcare institutions can have on the social and economic wellbeing of communities. The intern will work directly with the Healthcare Engagement team and will have the opportunity to participate in conference calls and webinars with mid- and senior management from healthcare institutions from around the country. Healthcare Anchor Network (HAN) Background:
HAN is a nationally recognized and growing collaboration of health systems seeking to improve health and wellbeing by addressing economic and racial inequities in the communities they serve by leveraging their institutional assets, such as hiring, procurement, and investment practices – this is referred to as adopting an Anchor Mission.
Since 2017, HAN has coordinated the work of the Building the Evidence Base (BeB) initiative group, which seeks to contribute to the body of evidence that highlights the importance of anchor strategies to the social and economic wellbeing of communities. The BeB initiative group developed a core set of metrics and indicators to help assess the impact of these anchor strategies. In 2018, HAN conducted, with the support of its member institutions, an initial data collection process to collect evidence of the impact of these strategies; a second data collection process will begin this summer.
Daily tasks will primarily support the work the Building the Evidence Base (BeB) initiative group of HAN. The intern will assess the anchor strategies data collected to date, modify, and maintain an online database to further evaluate the current impact of Anchor Mission strategies, and report any trends or insights that can help to inform data reporting moving forward. This will include supporting development of an online dashboard tool, inputting data, organizing the database, and supporting database users (i.e., health system partners), and preparing data reports to health systems.
Secondary tasks include providing administrative and operational support for the Healthcare Engagement team. This may include preparing printed reports and materials (including TDC’s Hospitals Aligned for Healthy Communities toolkit series) for dissemination, assisting with communications outreach efforts around healthcare engagement, adding content to the HAN website, and tracking news and events in the healthcare sector relevant to our work.
The intern may support other programmatic work of HAN as needs and interest arise, and will have the opportunity to participate in learning opportunities across TDC. A list of responsibilities and tasks can be found below.

Responsibilities & Tasks:
- Ideate and prepare confidential data reports on the anchor strategies that identify trends, outliers, or relevant insights both for the Healthcare Engagement team and for HAN members;
- Support communications with HAN members regarding data collection updates, reports dissemination, and other tasks related to the BeB initiative group;
- Assist in the development and maintenance of tools to help HAN members submit their anchor strategies data and accompanying documents, such as data sharing agreements;
- Participate in conference calls, webinars, and/or in-person meetings with health system staff or other relevant stakeholders related to the BeB initiative group’s work;
- Provide assistance as needed with administrative and operational support for the Healthcare Engagement team, including disseminating reports via mail to partners in the healthcare field, and updating and uploading content on the HAN website.
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the use of basic formulas and creation and formatting of moderately complex charts/graphs. Interest to learn more advanced features is a plus;
- Familiarity with maintaining and updating databases, managing complex datasets, cleaning and entering data;
- Strong organization skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently;
- Demonstrated interest in community economic development, health equity, economic democracy, or other social justice issues;
- Holding a bachelor’s degree or pursuing a master’s degree in economics, business administration, public health, data sciences, or other related field;
- Interest in impact evaluation and quantitative data analysis;
- Familiarity with basic website maintenance/content management systems (e.g. Wordpress or Weebly), or willingness to learn new systems.
The internship will last 6 months at a minimum (8-9 months is preferred), with a start date of around August 7, 2019 (with some flexibility to accommodate semester schedules and holiday breaks). The internship requires an ability to commit to 15-20 hours/week working out of our Washington, DC office. While the intern will have the ability to set the days and times of work, these must be consistent week to week. The position will receive a $15 hourly stipend.
