Research Internship (Washington, DC)

About the internship: 

The Democracy Collaborative is hiring for a part-time, paid intern position focused on providing research support for our Climate and Energy program. In particular, the internship will focus on the intersections of facilitating a just transition away from fossil fuels and promoting a more democratic and sustainable economy, supporting research in the areas of public ownership, energy democracy, community wealth building, and regional planning. 

The intern will produce research memos, fact check and edit documents, draft case studies, and conduct research for on-going projects. The intern will have the opportunity to work directly with Democracy Collaborative staff and participate in staff seminars, talks, and other events. About the Climate and Energy Program:

TDC’s Climate and Energy Program focuses on transitioning from the extractive, fossil fuel economy and building towards resilient and equitable communities based on energy democracy. The research intern will work on this team, and on projects to support the Theory, Research & Policy Division of TDC. 

 

Learning Areas & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct background research and produce research memos, case studies, and writing in support of ongoing projects and published material. 

  • Areas of focus will include: energy democracy, energy utility justice (specific focus on public ownership), regional planning for a just transition, rural economic development, and managed decline of the fossil fuel industry. 

  • Fact check and edits articles, reports, book manuscripts, and web content.

  • Update and upload content for community-wealth.org. This includes writing bibliographies and summaries for new articles and reports as needed. Examples of this kind of work can be found here.


Desired Qualifications:

  • An interest and strong commitment to climate and economic justice 

  • An interest in the field of community-based economic development. (Actual experience not required)

  • Experience or interest in editing, proofreading, and research

  • Demonstrated excellence in writing and communication (Specifically, having the ability to convey relevant information concisely and clearly)

  • A willingness to work independently with clear deadlines.

  • An ability to commit to 15-20 hours/week working out of our Washington, DC office.

 

The internship will last 6 months at a minimum, with a start date of or around mid- to late- October with some flexibility to accommodate semester schedules and holiday breaks). The internship requires an ability to commit to 15-20 hours/week working out of our Washington, DC office, and will receive a $15 hourly stipend.
